1. Transaction fee: 6.5%
The transaction fee is Etsy's primary revenue source from sellers. It's charged at 6.5% of the total sale amount — that means item price plus any shipping amount you charge the buyer, plus any gift wrapping fee.
This rate was raised from 5% to 6.5% on April 11, 2022. Many sellers noticed an immediate margin drop after that date.
Formula
Transaction fee = (Item price + Shipping you charge) × 6.5%
Real examples
| Sale price | Shipping charged | Taxable amount | Transaction fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| $9.99 | $0 | $9.99 | $0.65 |
| $19.99 | $4.99 | $24.98 | $1.62 |
| $29.99 | $5.99 | $35.98 | $2.34 |
| $49.99 | Free (you absorb) | $49.99 | $3.25 |
| $99.99 | $8.99 | $108.98 | $7.08 |
Important detail: the 6.5% applies to the shipping you charge the buyer, not what you actually pay for postage. If you charge $5.99 shipping but buy a label for $3.50, Etsy still takes 6.5% of the $5.99.
2. Listing fee: $0.20
Every time you publish or renew a listing, Etsy charges $0.20 USD regardless of whether the item sells. This applies to:
- First publishing a new listing
- Auto-renewal every 4 months (if the listing hasn't sold)
- When a single-quantity listing sells and auto-renews
- Manual renewals
Multi-quantity listings behave differently
If you list an item with quantity = 10, the listing only renews (and charges $0.20) when all 10 units are sold — not per individual sale. This makes multi-quantity listings much more cost-efficient for high-volume sellers.
Monthly listing cost estimate
| Active listings | Monthly renewal cost | Annual listing cost |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | $0.50/month | $6/year |
| 50 | $2.50/month | $30/year |
| 100 | $5/month | $60/year |
| 250 | $12.50/month | $150/year |
| 500 | $25/month | $300/year |
Based on $0.20 per listing per 4-month period ($0.05/month per listing). Does not include per-sale renewal fees.
3. Payment processing fee
If you use Etsy Payments (required in most countries), you pay a payment processing fee per transaction. This covers card processing, fraud protection, and currency handling.
| Country | Percentage | Fixed fee | Fee on $30 sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 3% | $0.25 USD | $1.15 |
| Canada | 3% | $0.25 CAD | $1.15 CAD |
| United Kingdom | 4% | £0.20 GBP | £1.40 |
| Australia | 3% | $0.25 AUD | $1.15 AUD |
| Eurozone | 4% | €0.30 EUR | €1.50 |
| France | 4% | €0.30 EUR | €1.50 |
| Germany | 4% | €0.30 EUR | €1.50 |

Why the fixed fee matters on low-price items
The $0.25 fixed component is disproportionately expensive for low-price items. On a $3.99 digital download, that $0.25 alone is 6.3% of your revenue. On a $99.99 item, it's only 0.25%. This is why high-volume digital sellers often bundle products or set minimum prices.
4. Offsite Ads fee: 15% or 12%
Etsy runs ads for your listings on Google Shopping, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing — at no upfront cost. When a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, you pay an Offsite Ads fee:
- 15% — shops with under $10,000 USD in sales in the past 365 days (can opt out)
- 12% — shops with $10,000+ USD in sales (mandatory, cannot opt out)
Total fee stack with Offsite Ads (US seller)
Transaction fee: 6.5%
Payment processing (US): 3.0% + $0.25
Offsite Ads (standard): 15.0%
Total: 24.5% + $0.25 per transaction
On a $30 sale: ~$7.60 in fees (over 25% of revenue)
Is Offsite Ads profitable?
| Your net margin (no ads) | Margin after 15% Offsite Ads | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10% | Negative (loss) | Opt out immediately |
| 10–15% | ~0–5% | Borderline — likely opt out |
| 15–25% | 0–10% | Review product by product |
| 25–35% | 10–20% | Likely profitable — keep on |
| 35%+ | 20%+ | Profitable — keep on |
How to opt out
If eligible (under $10k/yr): Etsy Shop Manager → Settings → Offsite Ads → Turn off. The setting takes effect immediately for future ad-driven sales.

5. Currency conversion fee: 2.5%
If you list items in a currency different from your Etsy Payments deposit currency, Etsy charges a 2.5% currency conversion fee. This is common for sellers in countries where Etsy Payments operates in one currency but the seller lists in USD to attract US buyers.
Etsy applies their own exchange rate (slightly worse than the mid-market rate) plus the 2.5% fee. The impact is significant for sellers in countries with volatile exchange rates.
6. Regulatory operating fee (select countries)
Etsy charges a regulatory operating fee in some markets to cover local compliance costs. As of June 2025:
- United Kingdom: 0.25% of the order total (item + shipping)
This fee is in addition to all other fees above. Etsy updates these periodically — check your seller dashboard for the most current country-specific fees.
7. What Etsy does NOT charge sellers
- No monthly subscription for the standard Etsy marketplace (Etsy Plus is $10/month and optional)
- No setup fee or store activation fee
- No commission on shipping labels purchased through Etsy (you pay postage cost only)
- No fee on VAT/GST collected from buyers on Etsy's behalf — Etsy handles this and it doesn't affect your payout
- No fee for digital downloads delivery — Etsy hosts and delivers digital files at no extra charge
8. Full worked example: US seller, $35 handmade item
Let's walk through every fee on a realistic Etsy sale. US seller, $35 item, $5.95 shipping charged, no Offsite Ads.
Profit margin = $25.41 / $35.00 = 72.6% of item price (after all Etsy fees, before your costs)
Now with Offsite Ads (15%) on the same sale:
Total Etsy fees on this sale with Offsite Ads: $10.48 (25.6% of $40.95)
9. Etsy Plus: $10/month (optional)
Etsy Plus is a subscription plan at $10 USD/month. It includes:
- 15 listing credits per month ($3 value at $0.20 each)
- $5 USD in Etsy Ads credits per month
- Restock requests — buyers can request notification when an item is back in stock
- Advanced shop customization options
- Discounts on custom domain and packaging
For most sellers, Etsy Plus does not pay for itself unless you heavily use Etsy Ads. The 15 listing credits offset only $3 of the $10 monthly cost.
10. How to reduce Etsy fees (legally)
- Use multi-quantity listings. Instead of separate listings for the same item in different sizes, use one listing with quantity ≥ 1. You pay $0.20 per renewal period instead of per sale.
- Opt out of Offsite Ads if eligible and unprofitable. If your margin is under 20%, the 15% fee may be costing you money on promoted sales.
- Charge realistic shipping.Offering free shipping absorbs the full shipping cost (including the 6.5% transaction fee on whatever price you charge). There's no fee benefit to free shipping — Etsy's 6.5% applies to the item price regardless.
- List in your home currency. Avoid the 2.5% currency conversion fee by listing in the same currency as your Etsy Payments account.
- Price above break-even with margin buffer. Use the Etsy Pricing Calculator to work backward from desired margin, not forward from cost.
