UK payment processing fee: 4% + £0.20
Etsy Payments processing for UK sellers is 4% + £0.20 per transaction — significantly higher than the US rate (3% + $0.25). This is because UK payment processing has different cost structures, and Etsy passes this through to sellers.
On a £20 sale: 4% × £20 + £0.20 = £1.00 in payment processing. On a £10 sale: 4% × £10 + £0.20 = £0.60 (6% effective rate — the fixed £0.20 hurts more on smaller purchases).
Worked example: £20 UK Etsy sale
£20 handmade item + £3 shipping, sold via Etsy Payments (UK)

UK vs US Etsy fee comparison
| Fee | UK sellers | US sellers |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | 6.5% |
| Payment processing | 4% + £0.20 | 3% + $0.25 |
| Listing fee | £0.16 | $0.20 |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.25% | None |
| VAT on fees | 20% if not VAT-registered | None |
| Total on £/$ 20 sale (approx) | ~14% effective | ~9.5% effective |
UK sellers face higher effective fees than US sellers — primarily due to the higher payment processing rate (4% vs 3%) and the additional regulatory operating fee. This means UK sellers need to price items slightly higher to achieve the same profit margins.
VAT on Etsy fees for UK sellers
If you are not VAT-registered, Etsy adds 20% UK VAT on top of its platform fees. This means:
- Transaction fee: 6.5% + 20% VAT = effectively 7.8%
- Payment processing: (4% + £0.20) + 20% VAT = effectively 4.8% + £0.24
- Total effective fee rate for non-VAT-registered UK sellers: ~15–17% of sale price
If you ARE VAT-registered: Etsy zero-rates its fees to you (B2B supply), and you account for the VAT in your return. You can also reclaim VAT on Etsy fees as input tax.
The UK VAT registration threshold is £90,000 annual turnover (2024/25 tax year). If you earn above this, registration is mandatory. Below this, it's optional — but registering allows you to reclaim VAT on business expenses.
Offsite Ads for UK sellers
The Offsite Ads fee structure is the same as for US sellers: 15% if your lifetime Etsy revenue is under £8,000 (~$10,000), or 12% if you've made over £8,000. You can opt out if you're under the £8,000 threshold; if you're over it, Offsite Ads participation is mandatory.
The 15% Offsite Ads fee applies to the full order value including shipping — and it stacks on top of all other fees. On a £25 sale with Offsite Ads: £25 × (6.5% + 4% + 0.25% + 15%) = £6.44 in platform fees alone.
