German payment processing fee: 4% + €0.30
Etsy Payments processing for German sellers is 4% + €0.30 per transaction — higher than the US rate (3% + $0.25), similar to the UK rate (4% + £0.20) but with a higher fixed component.
On a €20 sale: 4% × €20 + €0.30 = €1.10 in payment processing. On a €10 sale: 4% × €10 + €0.30 = €0.70 (7% effective rate — the fixed €0.30 hurts more on smaller purchases).
Worked example: €20 German Etsy sale
€20 handmade item + €4 shipping, sold via Etsy Payments (Germany)

Germany vs US vs UK Etsy fee comparison
| Fee | Germany | UK | US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | 6.5% | 6.5% |
| Payment processing | 4% + €0.30 | 4% + £0.20 | 3% + $0.25 |
| Listing fee | €0.20 | £0.16 | $0.20 |
| VAT on fees | 19% unless exempt | 20% if not VAT-registered | None |
| Total on 20-unit sale (approx) | ~12% effective (pre-VAT) | ~14% effective (pre-VAT) | ~9.5% effective |
German sellers face a similar effective fee load to UK sellers — both higher than US sellers, mostly driven by the higher payment processing rate. VAT treatment differs by registration status rather than by country baseline rate.
Kleinunternehmerregelung and Etsy fees
Germany's small business exemption (Kleinunternehmerregelung) lets sellers with prior-year revenue under €22,000 (and projected current-year revenue under €50,000) skip charging VAT on their own sales — and it also affects how Etsy's fee invoices are treated. Without Kleinunternehmerregelung, standard-rated businesses self-assess 19% VAT on Etsy's service fees under the EU reverse-charge mechanism and typically reclaim it as input tax, making the VAT largely a wash for a fully VAT-registered business — but it still requires the extra Umsatzsteuervoranmeldung reporting step.
