Is Mercari Worth It for Sellers?
Mercari asks less of you than any other resale platform — no sharing treadmill, no listing fees, a flat 10%, and almost every category accepted. What you give up is momentum: nothing surfaces your listings but search, so slow-moving inventory stays slow.

The short answer
Worth it for almost anyone selling general used goods— the fee is low, listings are free, and it accepts categories Poshmark and Depop will not touch. Less compelling if you sell women's fashion exclusively, where Poshmark's faster sell-through often beats Mercari's cheaper fee.
A realistic month
| Line | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gross sales (28 items, $34 avg) | $952.00 | Mixed categories, steady listing |
| Mercari selling fee (10%) | −$95.20 | No processing fee since Jan 2025 |
| Fee charged on buyer-paid shipping | −$22.40 | 10% of roughly $224 of shipping |
| Sourcing cost (28 × $7) | −$196.00 | Thrift, clearance, garage sales |
| Packaging (28 × $0.60) | −$16.80 | Mailers, boxes, tape |
| Net profit | $621.60 | 65.3% of gross |
Illustrative model. Buyer-paid shipping is passed to the carrier, so only the 10% charged on it is a seller cost — that is the line shown here.
Note the shape versus Poshmark: sourcing ($196) is now double the selling fee ($95). That is what a 10% platform looks like — your buying discipline, not the platform, sets your margin. Check your own margin →
What Mercari does well
- Second-lowest fees in resale. A flat 10% with nothing added — only Depop is cheaper, and only for fashion.
- Genuinely flat.No fixed per-order component, so a $5 item costs $0.50 rather than Poshmark's $2.95.
- Category breadth. Electronics, home goods, toys, books, tools — all of which barely move on the fashion-first apps.
- Low effort. No sharing requirement. Listings work while you ignore them, which is the opposite of Poshmark.
- Free unlimited listings. Testing inventory costs nothing but time.
- Escrow protection. Funds held until delivery protects both sides of the transaction.
Where it disappoints
- Passive discovery. Nothing pushes your listing in front of buyers. If nobody searches your keywords, nobody sees it.
- Fees on shipping. The 10% covers buyer-paid shipping too, which inflates the real rate on bulky items. Full breakdown.
- Buyer protection charge. Buyer-side, but it raises the total your buyer sees and can cost you the sale.
- Lowball offers. The offer culture is as aggressive as Poshmark's.
- Payout lag. About a week from sale to bank. Timeline here.
Fee comparison at $40
| Platform | Fee on $40 | You keep | Category fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Depop | $1.77 | $38.23 | Fashion only, Gen-Z audience |
| Mercari | $4.00 | $36.00 | Almost everything |
| eBay | $5.84 | $34.16 | Everything, largest reach |
| Poshmark | $8.00 | $32.00 | Fashion only, fastest sell-through |
Free shipping assumed. Depop's processing rate is a widely reported estimate, not a published figure.
Worth it by what you sell
| Category | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics, gadgets | Worth it | Strong search demand, high value per item |
| Toys, games, collectibles | Worth it | Active buyer base, eBay is the alternative |
| Home goods, kitchenware | Worth it | Few competing platforms accept these |
| Books, media | Marginal | Low prices, but the flat 10% keeps them viable |
| Women's fashion | Marginal | Cheaper than Poshmark but sells slower |
| Designer / luxury | Marginal | Buyers expect authentication elsewhere |
| Bulky low-value items | Not worth it | Fee on shipping pushes the real rate up |
| Vintage / streetwear | Not worth it | Depop's audience pays more for these |
Maximum sourcing price
The 10% fee leaves far more headroom than Poshmark's 20%. Here is the most you can pay per item and still hit a target margin:
| Resale price | After 10% | Max cost, 50% margin | Max cost, 70% margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $13.50 | $6.00 | $3.00 |
| $25.00 | $22.50 | $10.00 | $5.00 |
| $40.00 | $36.00 | $16.00 | $8.00 |
| $60.00 | $54.00 | $24.00 | $12.00 |
| $100.00 | $90.00 | $40.00 | $20.00 |
| $200.00 | $180.00 | $80.00 | $40.00 |
Compare the $40 row with Poshmark: Mercari lets you pay $16.00 for a 50% margin, Poshmark only $12.00. That $4 of extra sourcing headroom on every item is what a 10-point fee difference actually buys you.
