What Sells Best on Mercari
Mercari has no browse culture and no sharing mechanic — buyers arrive with a specific thing in mind and type it into search. That single fact determines what sells: nameable items with real search demand do well, and anything a buyer would have to stumble across does not.

The rule behind everything
If a buyer can name your item, it will sell on Mercari. If they would have to browse to find it, it will not. Poshmark and Depop create discovery; Mercari only answers search queries.
This is why an unbranded blouse can sit for six months on Mercari and sell in a week on Poshmark, while a PlayStation controller does the exact opposite.
Categories that perform
| Category | Why it works here | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Video games & consoles | Exact titles searched by name; strong repeat demand | $15–$300 |
| Phone & tech accessories | Model-specific searches; light and cheap to ship | $10–$80 |
| Collectible toys & figures | Named franchises; collectors search relentlessly | $20–$200 |
| Brand-name sneakers | Model + size is a precise query | $40–$250 |
| Small electronics | High value per pound; eBay is the only real rival | $30–$400 |
| Trading cards | Set and player names drive search | $5–$500 |
| Beauty & fragrance | Product names searched exactly; ships small | $10–$100 |
| Branded outdoor gear | Patagonia, Carhartt, North Face have real query volume | $30–$200 |
Every row shares one property: the item has a name a buyer would type. That is the filter to apply to anything you are considering sourcing.
Categories that struggle
| Category | Problem | Better platform |
|---|---|---|
| Unbranded fast fashion | No search term exists for it | Poshmark or Depop |
| Bulky furniture, homeware | Shipping often exceeds item value | Facebook Marketplace |
| Cheap bulky items generally | 10% charged on shipping too | Local sale |
| Heavily worn clothing | Buyers compare against cheap new listings | Donate |
| Very niche collectibles | Mercari's audience is too small | eBay |
| Luxury handbags | Buyers want authentication | The RealReal, Poshmark |
| Books (individually) | Low prices, shipping ratio poor | Bundle them |
The shipping ratio test
Because Mercari charges its 10% on buyer-paid shipping, the ratio of shipping cost to item price decides whether a category is viable at all:
| Example item | Price | Shipping | Fee | Real rate | Viable? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone case | $18.00 | $4.00 | $2.20 | 12.2% | Yes |
| Video game | $35.00 | $5.00 | $4.00 | 11.4% | Yes |
| Sneakers | $90.00 | $12.00 | $10.20 | 11.3% | Yes |
| Winter coat | $45.00 | $18.00 | $6.30 | 14.0% | Marginal |
| Cast iron pan | $25.00 | $16.00 | $4.10 | 16.4% | Skip it |
| Board game | $20.00 | $14.00 | $3.40 | 17.0% | Skip it |
Sneakers at $90 pay an effective 11.3%. A board game at $20 pays 17% — for the same handling effort. High value per pound is the property that makes Mercari profitable. More on how shipping affects fees →
Margin by category
Sell-through speed and margin do not always point the same way. A quick comparison at typical sourcing costs:
| Category | Sells for | Sourcing | Net after 10% | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Video games | $35.00 | $8.00 | $23.50 | 67% |
| Branded outdoor gear | $65.00 | $12.00 | $46.50 | 72% |
| Sneakers | $90.00 | $30.00 | $51.00 | 57% |
| Small electronics | $120.00 | $45.00 | $63.00 | 53% |
| Collectible figures | $45.00 | $10.00 | $30.50 | 68% |
Sourcing costs assume thrift, clearance, or bulk-lot buying. Free shipping not modelled here — add the label cost if you offer it.
Video games and collectibles carry the best margins because sourcing is cheap relative to resale value. Sneakers and electronics sell for more but cost more to acquire, so they need higher volume to match. Model your own category →
Writing titles that get found
Since search is the only discovery channel, the title is the listing. Write it the way a buyer would type it, not the way you would describe it:
| Weak title | Better title |
|---|---|
| Cute sneakers size 10 | Nike Air Max 90 White Mens Size 10 |
| Warm jacket, barely worn | Patagonia Better Sweater Fleece Womens M Grey |
| Video game bundle | PS4 Game Lot 5 Games Spider-Man God of War CIB |
| Nice purse | Coach Willow Tote Brown Leather Shoulder Bag |
| Phone charger | Anker PowerPort 65W USB-C Charger Model A2663 |
The pattern is always brand, model, key attribute, size or condition. Adjectives like "cute" and "nice" have no search volume and waste characters that could carry a model number.
Sourcing checklist
Before buying anything to resell on Mercari, check that it clears all four:
- Nameable. Does it have a brand and model a buyer would search?
- Ships under 2 lbs, or is worth over $60. Otherwise the fee on shipping erodes the margin.
- Sold comparables exist. Check completed sales, not active listings — active listings tell you what did not sell.
- At least 50% margin at your sourcing price. Anything thinner cannot absorb a return or a lowball offer.
