What is Shopify's transaction fee?
Shopify charges a transaction fee only if you use a third-party payment provider (not Shopify Payments): 2% on Basic, 1% on Shopify, 0.5% on Advanced plan. This is in addition to whatever your payment provider charges. Use Shopify Payments to avoid this fee.
How much does Shopify take per sale?
With Shopify Payments: Basic 2% + $0.30, Shopify plan 1.5% + $0.30, Advanced 0.85% + $0.30. On a $50 sale with Basic: $1.30 total fee (2.6%). With a third-party payment provider add another 2% ($1.00), totaling $2.30.
When does it make sense to upgrade from Basic to Shopify plan?
Upgrade when the payment processing savings exceed the $66/month plan difference. With Shopify Payments, the rate drops from 2% to 1.5% (saving 0.5% per sale). Break-even monthly revenue = $66 / 0.005 = $13,200/month.
