Frequently Asked Questions

How is Printful profit calculated?
Printful profit = Sale price − Printful base cost − Shipping − Selling platform fees − Ad spend. Printful's base price already includes fulfillment (printing + labor), so there is no separate fulfillment fee. On a $29.99 Gildan 64000 tee costing ~$9.95 base + $4.79 shipping, you keep about $15.25 before your marketplace's cut — then Etsy or Shopify fees come out of that.
Does Printful charge a monthly fee?
No. Printful's core plan is free — you only pay the per-item base cost plus shipping when an order is placed. The optional Printful Growth plan (~$24.99/mo, waived above a revenue threshold) adds up to ~20% off base costs and other perks, but the default presets in this calculator use standard Free-plan pricing.
Why is Printful more expensive than Printify on some products?
Printful runs its own in-house production and quality control, so base costs are typically higher on mugs and posters — for example a Printful 11oz mug is ~$9.35 vs ~$5.99 on Printify, and a 12×16" poster is ~$12.95 vs ~$7.99. Printful is often cheaper on some apparel (Gildan 64000 tee ~$9.95 vs Printify's Bella+Canvas ~$11.55). Compare the exact product you sell rather than the brand overall.
What sale price do I need for a healthy Printful margin?
As a rule of thumb, price Printful apparel at 2–2.5× your total cost (base + shipping) to leave room for marketplace fees and ads. For a tee costing ~$14.74 all-in, a $29.99–$34.99 retail price lands roughly 20–30% net margin after Etsy or Shopify fees. Use the 'Price for 20% / 30% margin' rows above to set your target for each product.
Does this include Etsy or Shopify fees?
Yes. Switch the 'Selling platform' toggle to apply Etsy (6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment) or Shopify Basic (2.9% + $0.30) fees automatically. Printful itself does not take a percentage of your sale — the platform fee comes from wherever you sell, so the same Printful product nets different profit on Etsy vs Shopify.
How accurate are the preloaded Printful costs?
The base costs are US-domestic estimates verified against printful.com/pricing in mid-2026 and are meant for planning, not exact quoting. Printful prices vary by product, print placement (front vs all-over), and region, and change over time. Always confirm the live price in your Printful dashboard before setting retail prices for customers.
