Price per bar for a target margin
US Etsy fees: 6.5% transaction and 3% + $0.25 processing on item + shipping, $0.20 listing fee per bar sold. Target-margin prices assume a one-bar order without Offsite Ads.
Cost per bar starts with the whole batch
Soap is made in batches, so the honest unit cost is the batch total divided by the bars you can sell. Weigh what each batch actually uses, not what a full bottle costs. Include your time for mixing, pouring, cutting and wrapping: if you pay yourself nothing, the margin you see is really your wage.
Worked example with the default inputs
| Line | Normal sale | Offsite Ads sale (15%) |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays ($10.00 + $4.50 shipping) | $14.50 | $14.50 |
| Etsy fees | −$1.83 | −$4.00 |
| Cost per bar | −$6.84 | −$6.84 |
| Postage + packaging | −$4.80 | −$4.80 |
| Profit (margin) | $1.04 (7.1%) | -$1.14 (-7.9%) |
For a 40% margin on a one-bar order with these costs, the price would need to be about $19.43. The defaults are illustrative; replace them with your own supplier prices and timed production.
Why single bars are hard to make profitable
Postage and Etsy's fixed processing fee are charged per order, not per bar. A single low-priced bar carries all of it. Use the "bars in the order" field to see how a 3- or 4-bar bundle changes the margin, then compare with the bundle pricing calculator.
