Which Etsy fees are refunded when a buyer returns an item?
When you issue a full refund on Etsy: the 6.5% transaction fee is refunded, and the percentage portion of the payment processing fee (3%) is refunded. What is NOT refunded: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed portion of the payment processing fee. So each full refund still costs you at minimum $0.45 in non-refundable fees.
How do Etsy refunds affect my profit?
A full refund costs you: product cost + shipping cost (already spent) + $0.20 listing fee + $0.25 fixed payment fee = roughly $0.45 minimum plus your COGS. On a $30 item with $12 COGS and $5 shipping, a refund costs you $17.45 net — even though you earned $0 revenue.
