The four layers of Amazon fees
Every Amazon sale runs through up to four fee layers, stacked on top of each other: a selling plan fee, a referral fee, an optional FBA fulfillment fee, and (for FBA inventory) a monthly storage fee. Not every seller pays all four — an FBM seller on the Individual plan only pays the first two.
1. Selling plan
Individual: $0.99 per item sold, no monthly commitment. Good for casual or very low-volume sellers.
Professional: a flat $39.99/month regardless of how many units you sell. Break-even against Individual is roughly 41sales/month — above that, Professional is cheaper, and it also unlocks advertising, bulk tools, and gated-category applications that Individual sellers can't access at all.
2. Referral fee
Amazon's cut of every sale, charged as a percentage of the item price (some categories include shipping) and enforced with a $0.30 minimum per item. Rates range from 5% (high-value Jewelry, Fine Art) to 45% (Amazon Device Accessories) depending on category — here are a few common ones:
| Category | Rate |
|---|---|
| Home and Kitchen | 15% |
| Clothing and Accessories | 5% / 10% / 17% |
| Jewelry | 20% ≤ $250, 5% above |
| Everything Else | 15% |
See the full referral fee table by category for all 30+ categories.
3. FBA fulfillment fee (FBA sellers only)
If Amazon picks, packs, and ships your order, they charge a fulfillment fee based on the item's size and weight tier. Amazon does not publish these rates publicly — they're only visible in Seller Central's Revenue Calculator — so treat any number you see here or elsewhere as an estimate until you confirm it for your actual SKU.
4. FBA monthly storage fee (FBA sellers only)
Amazon rents you warehouse space by the cubic foot, billed monthly, with a significantly higher rate during Q4 (October–December) to reflect holiday demand for space. Like fulfillment fees, exact current rates require a Seller Central login.
Worked example: $25 kitchen gadget, FBA, Professional plan
At this price and category, Amazon's per-unit fees run about 29% of the sale price before COGS or ad spend. Run your own numbers in the FBA Profit Calculator.
