How this is calculated

Platform fee: Sale price × Platform fee rate
Payment fee: Sale price × Payment fee rate + Fixed payment fee
Net revenue: Sale price − Platform fee − Payment fee − Currency conversion fee − Tax
Gross profit: Net revenue − Product cost − Shipping cost − Packaging cost
Return impact: Gross profit × Return rate
Net profit: Gross profit − Return impact − Ad spend
Profit margin: (Net profit / Sale price) × 100
Break-even price: (Fixed costs + Variable costs) / (1 − Combined fee rates)

Assumptions:

  • Ad spend expressed as cost per order (not total campaign spend)
  • Return rate applied to gross profit (lost profit per returned item)
  • Tax is seller-remitted VAT/GST (deducted from revenue), not income tax
  • Currency conversion fee applied only when listing in non-home currency

How to use this calculator

Select a platform preset to auto-fill fee rates, or use “Generic / Custom” to enter your own. Enter your sale price, costs, and optional ad spend. The calculator shows net profit after every deduction — including the often-overlooked impact of return rates.

What counts as product cost?

For physical products: your landed cost (manufacturing + import duty). For POD: the fulfillment cost charged by your print provider (e.g., Printify or Printful). For digital products: amortized creation cost or 0 if already profitable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my true profit as an online seller?
True profit = Sale price − platform fee − payment processing − product cost − shipping − packaging − ad spend − returns impact. Most sellers overestimate profit by ignoring payment fees, packaging, and returns. Example on Etsy: a $30 sale nets about $27.15 after fees, and only ~$12 after a $10 product cost, $4 shipping, and $1 packaging.
What fees do the platform presets use?
Verified July 2026: Etsy 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment (US); eBay 13.6% Final Value Fee + $0.40 per-order fee (payment processing included); TikTok Shop 6% flat referral fee (payment included); Shopify Basic 2.9% + $0.30 with Shopify Payments. You can override any rate with the Generic preset.
Should I include my time in the profit calculation?
For pricing decisions, yes — assign an hourly rate to production time and add it to product cost, or your 'profit' is just unpaid wages. For platform comparisons and fee math, time is usually left out because it's the same across platforms. This calculator treats time as part of product cost if you include it there.
How do returns affect my profit margin?
A returned order usually costs you the product (if unsellable), outbound shipping, and sometimes return shipping — while the platform refunds only part of its fees. At an 8% return rate, a product earning $10 per completed order can lose $2–4 of average profit per order. Enter your return rate to see the blended impact.
What profit margin should I aim for?
As a rule of thumb: 30%+ for handmade/branded physical products, 15–25% for reselling and dropshipping, 50%+ for POD with organic traffic, and 85%+ for digital products. Below 15% on physical goods, one platform fee increase or ad-cost spike can push you underwater.
