Etsy title basics
- Maximum 140 characters (Etsy indexes the full title)
- Etsy displays approximately 55–60 characters in search results (rest is truncated)
- The algorithm gives more weight to words appearing earlier in the title
- Titles are not case-sensitive for search ranking
Title structure that works
Formula: [Main product keyword], [Key descriptor], [Occasion/Recipient], [Material/Style], [Size/Variant]
❌ Weak title (keyword stuffed, unclear):
Mug Gift Mom Birthday Custom Name Personalized Coffee Mug Tea Cup Women Her
✓ Strong title (clear, natural, keyword-rich):
Personalized Coffee Mug, Custom Name Mug Gift for Mom, Birthday Gift for Her, Ceramic 11oz Cup
What to include in your title
- What the product IS — "coffee mug", "wall art print", "silver necklace" (put this first)
- Key attribute — "personalized", "minimalist", "vintage style"
- Who it's for — "for her", "for mom", "for coffee lovers"
- Occasion — "birthday gift", "wedding gift", "Christmas present"
- Material or style — "ceramic", "sterling silver", "bohemian"
- Size or variant — "11oz", "8×10 print", "18K gold"
Common title mistakes
- Starting with "The", "A", or "My" — wastes the highest-weighted position
- Repeating the same word 3+ times — no SEO benefit; wastes characters
- ALL CAPS — looks unprofessional; Etsy may penalize
- No keyword at the start — "Handmade with love, beautiful mug for special occasions" — terrible for SEO
- Too short — under 40 characters leaves ranking opportunity on the table
Relationship between title and tags
Etsy indexes both your title and your tags for search. You do not need to repeat title keywords in your tags — use tags to cover additional search phrases that aren't in your title.
