How Etsy uses tags for search

Etsy combines your title and tags to determine which searches your listing appears in. A buyer searching "personalized coffee mug" can match your listing if that exact phrase is in your title OR your tags.

Key insight: don't repeat title keywords in tags. Use tags to cover additional search phrases. This doubles your coverage.

Tag strategy: cover 5 intent categories

1. Product type variations

coffee mug, ceramic mug, coffee cup, tea mug

How different buyers name the same product

2. Recipient / who it's for

gift for her, gift for mom, coworker gift

Buyers often search by recipient

3. Occasion

birthday gift, christmas gift, mothers day

Seasonal and event-based searches spike

4. Style / aesthetic

boho decor, minimalist gift, vintage style

Match your product's visual identity

5. Material / feature

dishwasher safe, 11oz mug, ceramic gift

Buyers who know what they want search this way

Multi-word tags vs. single-word tags

Multi-word phrase tags are generally more valuable than single words. "Birthday gift" (2 words, 14 chars) matches the exact buyer phrase better than using "birthday" and "gift" as separate tags.

However, some categories benefit from single-word niche tags: "cottagecore", "witchy", "japandi" — aesthetic tags that signal your product to style-driven buyers.

What to avoid in tags

  • Duplicating your title words — no extra coverage, wastes slots
  • Duplicate tags — two of the same phrase is a waste
  • Very broad single words — "gift", "art", "home" are too competitive and too vague
  • Your shop name — Etsy already attributes searches for your shop name to you
  • Competitor names or brand names — against Etsy's policies
