How Etsy search actually works
Etsy search matches buyer queries to listing text (title, tags, category, attributes), then ranks matches using a "listing quality score" based on click-through rate and conversion rate relative to other listings shown for the same query. Recency and shipping price are secondary factors.
Title structure
Lead with the most important, highest-search-volume keyword phrase. Avoid keyword-stuffing unnatural phrases — Etsy's algorithm and buyers both respond better to readable titles that front-load relevant terms.
Use all 13 tags — no repeats
Each tag is a separate opportunity to match a different buyer search phrase. Repeating a word already in your title wastes a tag slot. Aim for multi-word, specific phrases ("personalized dog collar" rather than just "dog").
Conversion rate is a ranking factor, not just a sales metric
Because Etsy's algorithm favors listings that convert well relative to their views, improving photos, pricing, and descriptions doesn't just increase sales directly — it also improves future search placement, compounding over time.
Shipping price affects ranking
Etsy's search algorithm has historically favored listings with free or low-cost shipping, especially for the US free shipping guarantee threshold ($35+). This is a ranking nudge, not a fee benefit — see our shipping fees guide for the fee mechanics.
