POD Shipping Costs Explained
Unlike handmade goods where you buy your own label, POD shipping is set by your provider and can vary by product, destination, and order size in ways that catch new sellers off guard.

Why POD shipping is less predictable than handmade shipping
On Etsy handmade sales, you typically buy your own label and know the exact cost before charging the buyer. On POD, your provider determines the shipping cost, and it can shift by product weight, packaging method, destination, and sometimes by how many items are in the same order. This means shipping needs to be checked per-product rather than assumed to be a flat number across your whole catalog.
Domestic vs. international
International shipping on POD is often meaningfully more expensive than domestic — sometimes 2-3x depending on destination and product. If you sell internationally without adjusting pricing or shipping charges by region, international orders can turn into a loss even when domestic sales of the identical product are healthy.
Folding shipping into price vs. charging separately
Same tradeoff as other marketplaces: folding shipping into the item price ("free shipping") can improve conversion and search visibility on platforms that reward it, but only works financially if you've actually calculated the average shipping cost across your likely order mix and priced accordingly, rather than guessing.
Multi-item order shipping
If your provider discounts shipping for multiple items in one order, this is a real incentive to encourage bundle purchases — the shipping cost per item drops, directly improving margin on the order. Check whether your specific provider offers this before assuming per-item shipping cost is fixed regardless of order size.
