The key rule: Etsy fees apply to shipping charges
Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee applies to the total amount the buyer pays — item price plus any shipping you charge. This means:
- If you charge $5 shipping, Etsy takes $0.325 of that (6.5%)
- To break even on $5 actual shipping cost, you need to charge $5 / (1 − 9.5%) ≈ $5.52

The total fee base is the same either way. The only difference is where the shipping cost sits — in the item price or as a separate line.

When to offer free shipping
- Your product price can absorb shipping. If shipping is $5 on a $40 item, it's a 12.5% add-on that buyers might not blink at in the price.
- You sell to US buyers primarily. Etsy has historically favored free shipping for US domestic listings in search rankings.
- Your category is competitive. Free shipping listings often look more attractive in search results.
When to charge shipping separately
- Shipping is highly variable. If you sell to international buyers or have multiple shipping zones, separate shipping lets you charge accurately.
- Heavy or bulky items. Absorbing $15–$25 shipping into the price makes the item look expensive at first glance.
- Lower-priced items. Rolling $6 shipping into a $12 item pushes the price to $18, which may hurt conversion.
Practical rule
For most Etsy sellers targeting US buyers: offer free shipping and roll the shipping cost (plus Etsy's fee on that amount) into the item price. Price correctly using the calculator so you don't absorb the loss.
