Shopify Taxes for Sellers
What Shopify automates around sales tax, and what remains your responsibility as a merchant.
By Marginory team · Online sellers with hands-on experience across Etsy, Shopify & PODUpdated Fee data verified against official platform documentation
What Shopify automates
- Calculating sales tax at checkout based on your configured settings and buyer location
- Applying different rates across the jurisdictions you've set up nexus for
- Providing payout and transaction reports for record-keeping
What remains your responsibility
- Determining where you have sales tax nexus and configuring it correctly
- Actually remitting collected sales tax to the relevant tax authorities on schedule
- Filing income tax based on your net profit, not gross Shopify payout volume
1099-K reports gross, not profit
Similar to marketplace platforms, Shopify Payments' 1099-K reflects gross payment volume before fees, refunds, and your costs are subtracted. Your actual taxable income requires subtracting Shopify fees, COGS, shipping, and other business expenses.
Getting nexus right
Sales tax nexus rules vary by jurisdiction and change over time — some are based on physical presence, others on economic activity thresholds (a certain amount of sales into a state). Review your obligations periodically, especially as you scale into new markets.
