1. Final Value Fee (FVF) — eBay's main fee

The Final Value Fee is charged when your item sells. It's calculated as a percentage of the total buyer payment (item price + shipping you charge + any applicable taxes). The rate depends on category.

FVF rates by category (non-store sellers, US)

CategoryFVF ratePer-order feeFee on $50 sale
Clothing, Shoes & Accessories13.25%$0.30$6.93

Rates for non-store sellers. Store subscribers receive 1–4% lower rates depending on tier and category. Check ebay.com/help for your specific category.

Important: FVF includes payment processing

Since 2021, eBay uses Managed Payments — eBay processes all payments directly. The payment processing cost is built into the Final Value Fee. There is no separate PayPal fee or payment processor fee on top. What you see in the FVF rate is the all-in percentage.

2. Insertion fee (listing fee)

eBay gives non-store sellers 250 free listings per month (fixed-price and auction). If you exceed 250 listings, each additional listing costs $0.35 as an insertion fee — charged whether or not the item sells.

Seller typeFree listings/monthOverage fee
No Store (casual seller)250$0.35 each
Store Basic ($21.95/mo)1,000$0.25 each
Store Premium ($59.95/mo)10,000$0.10 each
Store Anchor ($299.95/mo)25,000$0.05 each

Most casual and part-time sellers stay under 250 listings/month and pay no insertion fees. High-volume sellers with many SKUs benefit most from Store subscriptions.

3. eBay Store subscription: is it worth it?

eBay Store subscriptions give you lower FVF rates (in some categories), more free listings, and a branded storefront. The math depends on your volume and categories.

No Store$0$0250

*FVF discount varies by category. Some categories have no reduction. Check eBay's fee schedule for your specific category.

Break-even calculation for Basic Store

Basic Store cost: $21.95/month

FVF savings (example: 2% on most items): revenue × 2%

Break-even: $21.95 ÷ 2% = $1,097/month in eBay sales

Above $1,100/month, Basic Store saves you money if your category gets the discount.

4. Promoted Listings

eBay Promoted Listings Standard lets you pay an extra fee to appear higher in search results. Unlike traditional ads, you only pay when a buyer clicks your promoted listing and purchases within 30 days.

  • You set an ad rate (% of sale price) — typically 2–15%
  • Higher ad rate = better placement in search results
  • Fee only charged on successful sale — no fee for clicks without purchase
  • Added on top of the regular Final Value Fee

  • No fee for relisting unsold items (up to your free limit)

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage does eBay take from each sale?
eBay's Final Value Fee ranges from 3% to 15% depending on category. Most common categories (electronics, clothing, collectibles) are 12.35–13.25% for non-store sellers. With Managed Payments, payment processing is included in the Final Value Fee — there's no separate PayPal fee. Add a $0.30 per-order transaction fee on top.
Does eBay charge a listing fee?
Non-store sellers get 250 free listings per month. After that, it's $0.35 per listing insertion fee. eBay Store subscribers get more free listings (Basic: 1,000/month, Premium: 10,000/month, Anchor: 25,000/month). Most casual sellers never exceed the free 250 limit.
What is the eBay Final Value Fee?
The Final Value Fee (FVF) is eBay's main revenue from sellers. It's a percentage of the total amount the buyer pays (item price + shipping + taxes). It varies by category: trading cards 12.35%, clothing 13.25%, electronics 13.25%, books 14.95%, most other categories 13.25%. Store subscribers get slightly lower rates (1–4% less depending on category and store tier).
What is eBay Managed Payments?
Managed Payments is eBay's built-in payment system. All eBay sellers must use it (since 2021). eBay processes payments directly and deposits to your bank account. The payment processing cost is included in the Final Value Fee — there's no separate PayPal or processor fee. Payouts happen 1–2 business days after the buyer pays.
Is an eBay Store subscription worth it?
An eBay Store subscription ($21.95–$299.95/month) is worth it when: (1) You have more than 250 listings/month AND pay insertion fees on excess, or (2) Your monthly FVF savings exceed the subscription cost. Basic Store at $21.95/month is worth it if you sell $300–500+/month in categories with meaningful FVF rate reductions. Use the eBay Store vs No Store calculator for your specific situation.
How do eBay Promoted Listings work?
Promoted Listings Standard: you set an ad rate (% of sale price, typically 2–15%). You only pay the ad fee when a buyer clicks your ad AND buys within 30 days. The fee is charged on top of the Final Value Fee. Promoted Listings Advanced: pay-per-click (CPC) model, you set a max bid. Most sellers start with Standard and set 2–5% ad rate on competitive items.
