How this is calculated
Loss per return = product cost + outbound shipping + return shipping − FVF credit
FVF credit = min(sale price × 13.25%, $750)
Monthly profit = completed orders × profit − returned orders × loss per return
Assumptions:
- eBay credits FVF on accepted returns but not payment processing fee
- Buyer pays return shipping
- Payment processing (~3.49% + $0.49) is not refunded on returns

Frequently Asked Questions
Does eBay refund the Final Value Fee when a buyer returns?
Yes — when a return is completed and you refund the buyer in full, eBay credits the FVF back to your account. However, the payment processing fee (Managed Payments ~3.49% + $0.49) is typically not refunded. You also keep paying for outbound shipping cost already spent.
What is eBay's return policy for sellers?
eBay requires all sellers to accept returns for items 'not as described' (NAD) — this is non-negotiable. For general returns (buyer's remorse), you can offer 30-day or 60-day return policies. Offering free returns can improve Best Match ranking, but you bear the return label cost.
Does free returns on eBay increase sales enough to offset the cost?
eBay data suggests free returns can lift conversion rates 5–10%, and items with free returns may rank higher in search. Whether it's worth it depends on your return rate and margin. Use this calculator to model the profit impact at your current return rate vs. projecting a 5% volume increase.
